Since Sept. 19, 2009, HM the King has stayed at Siriraj Hospital for 22 days by Sat. Oct. 10. The number of people who went to Siriraj Hospital to sign their get-well wishing for His Majesty has reached nearly 500,000 names across the spectrum of social statuses and geographical areas. Some of Them came to pray in front of HM’s Portrait and at both the monuments of Prince Mahidol of Songkla, HM the King’s father and the Princess Mother.


Why are those, Thais, members of foreign communities in Thailand, foreign visitors, diplomatic corps and the royal guest, Prince Andrew of Britain, who carried the message of Queen Elizabeth II to HM the King paying so much attention and concern for the illness of HM the King?

I think no one can describe his or her feeling of great concern over HM’s health with thousands of words to cover all the feelings those people have in their hearts. HM’s benevolence towards the Thai people everywhere, no matter where they live and how much the terrain is rugged or deep into the rural areas, almost unreachable and very difficult to approach, is too large to measure by any standard. HM visited them all to help them to have a better living condition and to survive the harsh life.

I have received a forward mail from my daughter who works at Bangkok Bank in Bangkok containing some brief accounts of HM’s several visits to see with his own eyes how bad the living conditions of the people were since more than 50 years ago. I have selected the most touching accounts that may bring tears to the eyes of Thai people who read this blog and translated them into English. I hope some foreigners who happen to come across this blog and read the stories would understand more about why Thai people give so much love to their King.

ครั้งหนึ่ง เมื่อหม่อมราชวงศ์คึกฤทธิ์ ปราโมช กราบบังคมทูลถามพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวว่า “เคยทรงเหนื่อย ทรงท้อบ้างหรือไม่” ครั้งนั้น พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวมีพระราชกระแสตอบว่า
“ความจริงมันน่าท้อถอยหรอก บางเรื่องมันน่าท้อถอย แต่ว่าฉันท้อไม่ได้ เพราะเดิมพันของเรานั้นสูงเหลือเกิน เดิมพันของเรานั้นคือบ้านคือเมือง คือความสุขของคนไทยทั่วประเทศ”

Our Stake

Once, M.R. Kukrit Pramoj had asked His Mjesty that, “Have you ever felt tired and disheartened?” HM the King gave this reply, “In fact, it’s quite disheartening. Some matters are really disheartening but our stake is so high. The stake is our home, our country, which is the happiness of the Thai people all over the country.”

เรื่อง”ราษฎรยังอยู่ได้”
ปีพุทธศักราช 2513 เมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวมีพระราชประสงค์ที่จะเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปเยี่ยมราษฎรในตำบลหนึ่งของอำเภอเมืองพัทลุง อันเป็นแหล่งที่ผู้ก่อการร้ายคอมมิวนิสต์ปฏิบัติการรุนแรงที่สุดในภาคใต้เวลานั้น ด้วยความห่วงใยอย่างยิ่งล้น ทางกระทรวงมหาดไทยได้กราบบังคมทูลขอให้ทรงรอให้สถานการณ์ดีขึ้นกว่าที่เป็นอยู่เสียก่อน แต่คำตอบที่ทางกระทรวงมหาดไทยได้รับก็คือ
“ราษฎรเขาเสี่ยงภัยยิ่งกว่าเราหลายเท่า เพราะเขาต้องกินอยู่ที่นั่นเขายังอยู่ได้ แล้วเราจะขลาดแม้แต่จะไปเยี่ยมเยียนทุกข์สุขของเขาเชียวหรือ

The People Can Live There
In 1970, His Majesty expressed his wish to visit the people at a district in Pathalung Province, where the communist terrorists infiltrated and operated in the most ferocious manner in the far south. With so much concern about the safety of HM the King, the Ministry of Interior had recommended to HM the King to wait until the situation is better. The answer given to the Ministry was that “the people have been in the risk of their safety several folds more than the risk we face because they have to live there. If they can live there, why we would become so coward even to make a visit to see how bad or good condition they are in?

“ดอกไม้จากหัวใจ”
ที่นครพนม บนเส้นทางรับเสด็จตรงสามแยกชยางกูร-เรณูนคร บ่ายวันที่ 13 พ.ย. 2498 อาณัติ บุนนาค หัวหน้าส่วนช่างภาพประจำพระองค์ ได้บันทึกภาพในวินาทีสำคัญที่กลายเป็นภาพประวัติศาสตร์ภาพหนึ่งของประเทศ

วันนั้นหลังจากทรงบำเพ็ญพระราชกุศล ณ วัดพระธาตุพนมวรมหาวิหารเสร็จสิ้นในช่วงเช้าแล้ว ทั้ง 2 พระองค์ได้เสด็จฯโดยรถยนต์พระที่นั่งกลับไปประทับแรม ณ จวนผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดนครพนม ราษฎรที่รู้ข่าวก็พากันอุ้มลูก จูงหลานหอบกันมารับเสด็จที่ริมถนนอย่างเนืองแน่น ดังเช่นครอบครัวจันท์นิตย์ ที่ลูกหลานช่วยกันนำ แม่ตุ้ม จันท์นิตย์ วัย 102 ปี ไปรอรับเสด็จ ณ จุดรับเสด็จห่างจากบ้าน 700 เมตร โดยลูกหลานได้จัดหาดอกบัวสายสีชมพูให้แม่เฒ่าจำนวน 3 ดอก และพาออกไปรอที่แถวหน้าสุดเพื่อให้ใกล้ชิดเบื้องพระยุคลบาทที่สุด
เปลวแดดร้อนแรงตั้งแต่เช้าจนสาย เที่ยงจนบ่าย แผดเผาจนดอกบัวสายในมือเหี่ยวโรย แต่หัวใจรักภักดีของหญิงชรายังเบิกบาน เมื่อเสด็จฯ มาถึงตรงหน้า แม่เฒ่าได้ยกดอกบัวสายโรยราสามดอกนั้นขึ้นจบเหนือศีรษะแสดงความจงรักภักดีอย่างสุดซึ้ง พระเจ้าแผ่นดินทรงโน้มพระองค์อย่างต่ำที่สุด จนพระพักตร์แนบชิดกับศีรษะของแม่เฒ่า ทรงแย้มพระสรวลอย่างเอ็นดู พระหัตถ์แตะมือกร้านคล้ำของเกษตรกรชรา ชาวอีสานอย่างอ่อนโยน
เป็นคำบรรยายเหมือนไม่จำเป็น สำหรับภาพที่ไม่จำเป็นต้องบรรยาย ไม่มีใครรู้ว่าทรงกระซิบคำใดกับแม่เฒ่า แต่แน่นอนว่าแม่เฒ่าไม่มีวันลืมเช่นเดียวกับที่ในหลวงไม่ทรงลืมราษฎรคนสำคัญที่ทรงพบริมถนนวันนั้น หลานและเหลนของแม่เฒ่าเล่าว่า “หลังจากเสด็จพระราชดำเนินกลับกรุงเทพฯ แล้ว ทางสำนักพระราชวังได้ส่งภาพรับเสด็จของแม่เฒ่าตุ้ม พร้อมทั้งพระบรมรูปหล่อด้วยปูนพลาสเตอร์พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว พระราชทานแผ่นมาทางอำเภอพระธาตุพนมให้แม่เฒ่าตุ้มไว้เป็นที่ระลึก”
พระมหากรุณาธิคุณอันหาที่สุดมิได้นี้ อาจมีส่วนชุบชูชีวิตให้แม่เฒ่ายืนยาวขึ้นอีกด้วยความสุขต่อมาอีกถึงสามปีเต็ม ๆ แม่เฒ่าตุ้ม จันท์นิตย์ ราษฎรผู้โชคดีที่สุดคนหนึ่งในรัชกาลที่ 9 สิ้นอายุขัยอย่างสงบด้วยโรคชราเมื่ออายุได้ 105 ปี

Flowers from the Heart
In Nakorn Phanom on the route for HM the King’s convoy to pass a point known as Chayangkura- Renu Nakorn 3-way junction on Nov. 13, 1955 in the afternoon, Mr. Anat Bunnag, the division chief of HM the King private photographers had snapped a moment of truth picture that has become one of the country’s historic photographs.

After HM the King finished his merit-making rite at Wat Thatphanomvaramahaviharn in the morning, Their Majesties the King and Queen traveled by car to stay for a night at the Governor’s official residence. The local people who got the news gathered at the roadsides with their children in tow, creating a large crowd to watch Their Majesties. The Chandnit family members of Grandma Toom, at 102 years old, brought her to wait for the royal convoy to pass at a roadside spot about 700m from their home. The grandma’s children brought along a bunch of 3 pink lotus flowers for her to hold in her hands in reverence of Their Majesties and brought her to the front line as close as possible to watch her King and Queen.It’s a hot day with the bright sunshine from the morning to early afternoon, making the lotus flowers in the hands of Grandma Toom wilted and drooping but her face was still fresh with happiness. When Their Majesties’ car stopped in front of her, the old woman lifted her hands with the 3 wilting lotus flowers in her palms above her head, as a sign of high respect and deep loyalty. His Majesty stepped out from the car and walked over to the old woman. HM the King bent down to her as low as possible, his face nearly touched the old woman’s face. His Majesty smiled, his expression of kindness radiated out, and reached out his hand to gently touch the coarse and aging hands of the old north-easterner. It’s a scene that needed no description and a picture that description was not necessary. No one knows what His Majesty whispered to the grandma. But she will never forget.

Likewise, His Majesty has never forgotten that old citizen he met on the roadside that day. Grandchildren of the old woman related, “After Their Majesties got back to Bangkok, the Royal Palace Bureau had sent Grandma Toom a picture of that moment of truth between His Majesty and herself together with a miniature plaster-molded image of her beloved King through the Office of Phra Thatphanom District for her keepsakes.”The immeasurable royal kindness might have given the old grandma and extended age for another 3 years. Grandma Toom Chandnit, one of the most lucky citizens in the 9th Reign, passed away peacefully of her old age at 105 years.

เขาเดินมาเป็นวัน ๆ
“…มีอยู่ครั้งนึง ข้าพเจ้าอายุ 18 ปี ได้ตามเสด็จ…ตอนนั้นเป็นช่วงหลังพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษก เสด็จฯ เยี่ยมราษฎรทุกจังหวัดและอำเภอใหญ่ ๆ ก็เสด็จฯ ประมาณ 9 โมงเช้า เสด็จออกทรงเยี่ยมราษฎรมาเรื่อย ๆ
ทีนี้ข้าพเจ้าก็รู้สึกว่า แหม นานเหลือเกิน ตอนนั้นยังไม่กางร่ม ตอนนั้นยังไม่ค่อยกลัวแดด ไม่ใส่หมวก ก็รู้สึกแดดเปรี้ยง หนังเท้านี้รู้สึกไหม้เชียว ก็เดินเข้าไปกระซิบท่านว่า พอหรือยัง ก็โดนกริ้ว
“นี่เห็นไหมราษฎรเขาเดินมาเป็นวัน ๆ เพื่อมาดูเราแม้แต่นิดเดียว แต่นี่เรายืนอยู่ไม่เท่าไรล่ะ ตอนนี้ทนไม่ไหวเสียแล้ว..”

They Walked for Days

“…There was a time, when I was 18 years old. I went along with His Majesty…. It was just after the Coronation Day. His Majesty wanted to visit the people in all provinces and large districts. Each visit started at 9am regularly every day. I had a feeling that it took so long a time. I had no umbrella at the time as I was not afraid of the sun and had no hat. The sun was quite strong to the point that my feet seemed to burn. I walked near His Majesty and whispered, “Is it enough?” His Majesty got angry and said, “Look, the people walked for days to see us just for a moment. We stand here just a short time and you couldn’t bear it already.”

“ต่อไปจะมีน้ำ”
บทความ “น้ำทิพย์สาดเป็นสายพรายพลิ้วทิวงาม ทั่วเขตคามชื่นธารา” เขียนโดย มนูญ มุกข์ประดิษฐ์ ตีพิมพ์ในหนังสือพิมพ์ไทยรัฐ ฉบับวันที่ 5 ธ.ค.2528 ได้เล่าให้ผู้อ่านชาวไทยได้ประจักษ์ถึงเรื่องอัศจรรย์ของ “ในหลวง” กับ”น้ำ” ที่เกิดขึ้นในคำวันหนึ่งของเดือน ก.พ.2528
ด้วยความทุกข์ที่เปี่ยมล้นใจอันเนื่องมาจากต้องเผชิญความแห้งแล้งอย่างหนัก หญิงชราคนนึ่งที่มาเข้าเฝ้าฯ รับเสด็จได้คลานเข้ามากอดพระบาทของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว กราบบังคมทูลด้วยน้ำตาอาบแก้ม ขอพระราชทานน้ำ
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวมีพระราชดำรัสตอบว่า”ยายไม่ต้องห่วงแล้วนะ ต่อไปนี้จะมีน้เราเอาน้ำมาให้”
แล้วพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวก็ทรงพระดำเนินกลับไปยังรถพระที่นั่งซึ่งจอดห่างออกไปราว 5 เมตร ปรากฏว่าท่ามกลางอากาศที่ร้อนแล้ง จู่ ๆ ก็เกิดฝนตกลงมาเป็นครั้งแรกในรอบ 5 ปีทำให้
ผู้ตามเสด็จและราษฎรในที่นั้นถึงกับงุนงงไปตาม ๆ กัน
There Will Be Water Later On

In an article, “The Holy Water is Falling Down in Sparkling Streams of Cristal-Clear Rain Drops to Bring Wetness to Our Land All Over”, written by Manoon Mukpradith in the daily Thai Rath on Dec 5, 1985 to tell a story of a miracle happened during a late evening, one day in Feb. 1985. (The article’s title comes from a passage in the lyric of one of His Majesty’s hit songs, The Falling Rain.)

With a heart filled with lots of suffering from a serious drought, an old local woman, who had waited to see HM the King on a royal visit to a faraway village, crawled up close to His Majesty and embraced his feet. She said with tears falling down her cheeks to His Majesty, asking for royal help in bringing water to the village. His Majesty said, “Grandma, don’t worry. There will be water later on. I’ll bring water to you.”

His Majesty, then, walked back to the royal car, parked about 5 metres away. Suddenly, the extremely dry and hot air changed to a downpour for the first time in 5 years. The rain surprised all officers in His Majesty’s convoy and the local villagers. It’s like a miracle to all of them.
